Developing Research Partnerships
Over the past 15 years, research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has quadrupled, firmly establishing the University as one of the nation’s top-ranked research universities. With exponential growth and success, the need for a single point of contact to assist industry partners and faculty in navigating the inner workings of the University became clear.
As part of the University’s Corporate and Foundation Relations Office, this small, but mighty, Industry Relations team is perfectly poised to assist industry partners with all of their university-industry research partnership needs. To build new corporate strategic relations and expand existing partnerships that advance the mission of UNC-Chapel Hill, the Industry Relations team works with many different offices, centers and institutes across campus, as well as individual schools and colleges to get projects up and running and maintain long-term relationship success.
- Cultivating mutually-beneficial relationships between UNC-Chapel Hill and industry partners
- Acting as a point-of-contact for industry partners seeking academic collaboration
- Navigating UNC-Chapel Hill administration
- Arranging meetings (in-person or virtual) with faculty and leadership
- Actively participating in discussions from concept to launch
- Managing the alliance
“Teaming with a leading university like UNC furthers Eastman’s commitment to world-class open innovation that brings new ideas and technologies to market more quickly than traditional approaches.”
– Greg W. Nelson, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Eastman Chemical Company
Partnership Success Stories
The University has a rich tradition of successful partnerships with industry partners, many of which have led to breakthrough discoveries and the establishment of innovative enterprises that tackle the world’s most complex challenges. With all five major health care schools—medicine, public health, pharmacy, dental and nursing—on the same campus and with a full complement of schools and departments dedicated to the basic sciences, humanities and arts, UNC-Chapel Hill has established an international reputation for providing companies and foundations with true interdisciplinary research, teaching and public service. Here are just a few examples:
Eastman Chemical Company
Eastman Chemical and UNC-Chapel Hill have entered into a collaborative chemistry and material sciences research agreement with Eastman, who is providing a minimum of $1.5 million in support over the course of six years. This partnership was renewed in August 2019.
